In 2000, there were almost 47 million English Language Learners in the United States. That’s almost 18% of the population in the country. It is estimated that this will increase to 40% by the year 2030.
As the world’s most popular sport, soccer has a unique appeal to many ELL learners. The topic is engaging and many are willing to make the extra effort to read the articles in this magazine. This builds their vocabulary, comprehension skills and connects with many students in an emotional and personal way.
There are many topics of discussion that can be initiated relating to the content of READ Mundial. The review of the biography of Claudio Suarez could generate a conversation about what students would include in their own life story and what they would title such a book. Have students interview each other as an extension.
You might be surprised that some students follow international competitions like the Olympics or other soccer tournaments very closely. Students are pleased to share the information they know and feel like the experts.
The magazine also sets up reading and writing beyond its own content. We invite students to participate in both an essay contest and a reading minutes competition. Our website explains the rules in full and offers suggestions to students who want guidance.
The calendar page is full of tips and trivia for young readers. Because it is blank, students adjust to the month of their choice. Use the magazine as a vehicle to stimulate opportunities for home reading.
Most of all, we are committed to becoming a valuable resource for teachers. Please let us know how we can improve the magazine to better serve you and your students. Tell us about your experience if you use the articles, contests or games as part of a lesson by filling out the survey.
We value the work you do in contributing to the success of all young people.
